Makhachev breaks UFC win record with victory over Machado Garry

Islam Makhachev reinforced his reputation as one of the sport's most dominant fighters by defeating Ian Machado Garry via unanimous decision at UFC 330, held at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia.

The win marked Makhachev's 17th consecutive victory in the UFC, surpassing the record of 16 set by Anderson Silva that had stood for 13 years. It also ended Machado Garry's bid to become the first Irish UFC champion since Conor McGregor.

The 34-year-old Makhachev, a former lightweight champion, improved his overall record to 29 wins and one loss. Machado Garry, 28, suffered just his second defeat in a 19-fight career.

Billed as a matchup between grappling and striking styles, the bout followed a familiar pattern for Makhachev, who took his opponent down in the opening round and controlled him against the cage. In the second round, Makhachev landed a head kick that dazed Machado Garry before taking him to the canvas again.

Machado Garry survived both rounds and managed to land some strikes, including punches that drew blood from Makhachev's face during clinch exchanges. However, Makhachev dominated in key statistics, completing seven unanswered takedowns and accumulating more than 12 minutes of control time compared to Machado Garry's 34 seconds, despite the Irishman landing more significant strikes overall, 29 to 22.

After the final bell, the two fighters embraced, and Machado Garry raised Makhachev's arm in a gesture of respect. Machado Garry told fans he remained proud of his achievements and vowed to return. The result further cements Makhachev's standing among the greatest fighters in UFC history.
