Mass protests in Madrid over eviction of elderly woman and housing crisis
Thousands gathered in Madrid to protest the eviction of a pensioner known as Maricarmen, whose case has become a symbol of Spain's housing crisis. Demonstrators are demanding affordable rents and an end to evictions without alternative housing.
About 150 tents were set up in a Madrid square on Sunday as part of an ongoing sit-in, with families spanning several generations taking part. Organisers say they intend to stay at least until Tuesday, when Spain's government is scheduled to hold a meeting.
Banners across the square carried messages calling for affordable housing, fair rental prices, and an end to evictions carried out without alternative accommodation being provided. One recurring message referenced a specific case: that of a woman known as Maricarmen.
A 70-year tenancy ends
Maricarmen had lived in the same Madrid apartment for around 70 years, since her father first rented it in 1956. According to the Madrid Tenants' Union, the property was later bought by an investment fund, which raised her monthly rent from €500 to €2,650 before later lowering it to €1,650.
Police carried out her eviction on Wednesday after several earlier attempts had failed. She was taken to hospital afterwards, reportedly due to exhaustion from the ordeal. Her case has since become a rallying point in the broader debate over Spain's housing shortage.
A nationwide shortage
The Bank of Spain estimated last year that the country is short by around 550,000 homes. Publicly subsidised rental housing accounts for less than 2% of Spain's total housing stock, well below the EU average of 8%.
Authorities estimated Saturday's march drew around 25,000 participants, while the Madrid Tenants' Union claimed turnout exceeded 300,000.
