12-year-old boy flees police at 187 km/h in father's car in Madona region
A dangerous police chase unfolded in the Madona and Cesvaine area on Friday after a boy born in 2013 fled from police in a car he had taken without his father's knowledge, reaching speeds of up to 187 km/h. No one was injured, but other road users were endangered.
On Friday, September 18, at around 5:09 PM, police officers attempted to stop an Audi on Lazdonas Street in Madona. The driver refused to comply and fled instead.
The driver continued through Madona via Rūpniecības and Saules streets, then headed toward Cesvaine along the Pļaviņas–Madona–Gulbene highway (P37), entering the town of Cesvaine via Pils and Augusta Saulieša streets.
Reckless driving
During the chase, the car was driven aggressively, grossly violating traffic rules and endangering other road users. The speed limit was significantly exceeded both within populated areas and outside them — at some points the car reached speeds of up to 187 km/h.
At 5:20 PM, the Audi stopped in Cesvaine on Augusta Saulieša Street near the stadium. During the check, police discovered the driver was a boy born in 2013, who had taken the car keys without his father's knowledge in order to go for a drive.
Investigation launched
An internal inquiry has been opened into the incident. The case materials will be assessed both regarding the minor's actions and the parents' responsibility for supervising the child.
The State Police once again urged parents and guardians to keep closer control of their vehicle keys and to discuss with their children the potential consequences and dangers of irresponsible behavior to their own lives and the lives of others.
