Viewers of Lithuanian television channel TV3 noticed an unusual glitch during the 4 p.m. news bulletin on Monday, 19 October: during the weather segment, maps with place names in Russian appeared on the screen behind the forecaster. The broadcaster has since apologised and explained the incident as a technical error.

How the glitch unfolded

The weather segment began as usual. Presenter Audre Kudabiene handed over to forecaster Naglis Šulijs, who spoke about the coming days' weather and meteorological developments in Europe and Lithuania.

At first the screen showed the usual virtual map with place names in Lithuanian. Soon it was replaced by other maps labelled in Russian.

The broadcaster's explanation

The Lithuanian news portal Lrytas contacted TV3 representatives, and the broadcaster confirmed that a technical fault had occurred during the live broadcast. According to them, a technical staff member made a mistake during the news and aired the weather forecast map of a different programme.

"During the 4 p.m. news, a technician made a mistake and broadcast the weather forecast map of another programme. We apologise for what happened," TV3 representatives told the portal.

The source does not say whether any further steps will be taken because of the error.
