Lithuanian conservative politician Agnė Bilotaitė has decided to give up her seat in parliament and step away from active politics, her party announced on Wednesday. On Monday she submitted a written request to the Central Electoral Commission to end her parliamentary mandate before the current term expires.

In a statement, Bilotaitė said the decision was not easy and had been developing for some time. She realised she could no longer postpone it and had to look after her health and her family's needs, which the intensive work in the Seimas did not allow her to do properly. She apologised to anyone who might be disappointed and said she felt responsible for the work she could not continue. In her view, it would be unfair to carry on without giving it all the time and effort possible.

Bilotaitė explained that stepping back was necessary so that she could take on new projects in the future. She will remain a member of the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats. She thanked her party colleagues, fellow lawmakers and her team for their work and cooperation.

Work in the Seimas

In the current term, Bilotaitė sat on the Seimas Committee on Legal Affairs and the Parliamentary Commission for the Control of Criminal Intelligence. She also chaired the temporary parliamentary group for women and led a working group set up by the Seimas board to improve legal regulations on preventing and combating sexual harassment and violence.

Bilotaitė was Lithuania's interior minister from 2020 to 2024. She has been in parliament since 2008 and was re-elected in 2024 on the Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats' party list. Her seat is expected to pass to Kęstutis Masiulis, the next candidate on the list.
