A new unit of Lithuania's State Border Guard Service departed for Latvia on Wednesday to help combat illegal migration at Latvia's border with Belarus, Lithuania's Interior Ministry announced on Thursday.

The unit was sent to support Latvian border authorities in dealing with the flow of migrants coming from Belarusian territory. The move reflects ongoing cooperation between the Baltic neighbors to reinforce external borders with Belarus, which in recent years has become a significant route for irregular migration into the European Union.

The announcement did not specify the number of officers deployed or how long the unit's mission would last.
