Lithuania and Luxembourg have signed an agreement to secure satellite communications services for the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Lithuanian Defence Ministry announced on Wednesday. Under the deal, Luxembourg will contribute 2.5 million euros to the project. The agreement was signed in Luxembourg during a meeting between Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas and his Luxembourg counterpart Yuriko Backes. Their discussions covered NATO deterrence and defense, European Union security initiatives, and bilateral cooperation in the space sector.

Minister Kaunas emphasized that the war in Ukraine has shown satellite communications and other space technologies to be essential components of modern military operations. "We value Luxembourg's leadership in the space sector and the opportunity to jointly develop capabilities that will contribute to the efficiency and resilience of the Lithuanian Armed Forces," he said.

The two ministers also explored ways future EU investments in space could be directed toward strengthening national defense and security capabilities. Luxembourg has become one of Europe's most significant players in the commercial space industry, hosting a cluster of satellite and space technology companies and offering a framework that attracts major international operators.

The agreement marks a step forward in Lithuania's efforts to modernize its military communication infrastructure, leveraging Luxembourg's expertise in space technology.
