Liepiņš steps down from commission probing fatal Denali climbing accident
Kristaps Liepiņš, head of the Latvian Alpinist Federation's Alpinism Commission, has withdrawn from the body investigating May's Denali accident in which three Latvian climbers died. The remaining six members will continue the inquiry.

The Latvian Alpinist Federation (LAS) has announced that Kristaps Liepiņš, chairman of its Alpinism Commission, has resigned from the independent commission set up to investigate the fatal accident on Mount Denali in Alaska earlier this year.
The Denali accident
In late May, a seven-member expedition led by Valdis Puriņš set out to climb Denali, North America's highest peak. While descending a steep slope, three climbers — Inese Pučeka, Vija Olte and Renārs Kunigs-Salaks — fell to their deaths. A fourth member, Mārtiņš Bilzēns, was critically injured and hospitalized in Alaska before later being transported back to Latvia. The remaining three — Puriņš, Edgars Madžulis and Guntis Svariņš — were evacuated from the mountain with rescuers' help.
Investigation continues without him
Following the tragedy, the LAS board decided to form an independent commission tasked with thoroughly and objectively reviewing the circumstances of the accident, analyzing safety practices, and drafting recommendations to reduce risk in future expeditions. To avoid conflicts of interest, neither members of the expedition nor relatives of the victims were included on the panel, and all members signed declarations confirming impartiality and confidentiality.
With Liepiņš's departure, the commission continues its work with six members: LAS president Normunds Reinbergs, Pēteris Kūlis, Kaspars Klapkalns, Gita Logina, Rolands Laveiķis and Līga Plakane.
LAS said commission members will refrain from offering public comments or assessments while the investigation is ongoing, to keep the process free of outside influence. Once the work concludes, a summary report along with safety recommendations for the climbing community is expected to be published.
