Ann Widdecombe, 78, a former Member of Parliament, was found dead at her countryside home in southwest England last Thursday. Police have not disclosed the cause of death, citing "serious injuries." Initial assessments suggested no link to terrorism, but following new evidence, the investigation has been taken over by counter-terrorism police.
The suspect was arrested on Saturday in South Yorkshire, over 320 kilometers from Widdecombe's property. He has not yet been charged. Police believe the attack occurred on Wednesday around 12:30 p.m., and concerns arose when Widdecombe missed a scheduled television interview.
Widdecombe was a prominent conservative figure, serving as MP from 1987 to 2010, including as Prisons Minister under John Major. After leaving Parliament, she became a reality TV star on "Strictly Come Dancing" and "Celebrity Big Brother." She later joined the Brexit Party and served briefly as a Member of the European Parliament before the UK left the EU. Most recently, she was a member of the right-wing Reform UK party and frequently represented it in media.
