The United Kingdom is reforming its migration system, introducing new opportunities for refugee entry while simultaneously toughening measures against illegal immigration. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud announced new legal pathways allowing community organizations, universities, and employers to sponsor refugees to come to the country.

The initiative is modeled on a similar program in Canada, where approximately 400,000 people have settled since 1979. Mahmoud stated the new routes are intended for “genuine refugees,” while also closing loopholes that have often been exploited.

As part of the reform, the definition of family will be tightened to include only direct family members. This aims to address excessive claims and the abuse of human rights laws, which critics say have frequently been used to prevent the deportation of individuals without the right to remain in the UK.

The new immigration law seeks to counter such abuses by strengthening rules on residency rights. The Home Secretary emphasized that the reform both creates opportunities for real refugees and blocks paths for illegal immigration.
