Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said NATO's military presence in the Arctic poses a direct security threat to Russia, as alliance members expand their footprint in the far north following Russia's war on Ukraine.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated in an article published Monday that Moscow regards NATO's activity in the Arctic as a direct threat to its security. Writing in a piece published by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Lavrov, a longtime close associate of President Vladimir Putin, described NATO's military exercises in the region as aggressive.

He warned that such military activity in the Far North creates direct risks to Russia's security and raises the likelihood of incidents that could spark an armed confrontation with potentially catastrophic consequences.

Background

In February, NATO launched its Arctic Sentry mission to reinforce the alliance's presence in the far north, reflecting growing attention to the region amid tensions with Russia and US President Donald Trump's push to acquire Greenland. Moscow had already objected to the mission when it was announced.

Russia maintains the largest military presence and the most extensive military infrastructure of any Arctic nation, including a fleet that features nuclear-armed submarines. Moscow views the Arctic as within its sphere of influence and is developing a shipping route through the region to link with Asian markets. China has also stepped up its activity in the mineral-rich area in recent years, largely in partnership with Russia.

Norway, which borders Russia, expanded a recently established military brigade headquartered in the Arctic this month, the latest in a series of moves by NATO members to strengthen their defence presence in the region since Russia launched its war on Ukraine in 2022. Russia has previously rejected claims that it poses a threat to NATO.
