Latvian young checkers players win four gold medals in classic format at European Youth Championship
At the European Youth Championship in 100-square checkers taking place in Tallinn, Latvia's young players won four gold, one silver and one bronze medal in the classic format. Competition continues with rapid and blitz formats.
The European Youth Championship in 100-square checkers is taking place in Tallinn from August 1 to 9, with athletes competing across three formats — classic, rapid and blitz. The first stage, held from August 1 to 7, covered the classic format, in which Latvia was represented by 38 participants across ten age groups. In total, 226 athletes from 12 countries took part in this format, mostly playing nine rounds under the Swiss system.
Gold medals
Latvia's young checkers players secured four European Youth Champion titles. In the youngest category, U10, gold medals went to Jasmīna Lamberte among girls and Ernests Andersons among boys. In the U13 girls' group, the champion title was won by Varvara Ivanova, while in the U16 girls' group it went to Malvīne Misāne.
Other medalists
Latvian representatives also earned other podium finishes across several groups. In the U10 girls' group, second place went to Velta Urmane and third to Marlēna Gudēvica Liepiņa. In the U10 boys' group, Everts Krūmiņš took third place. In the U13 girls' group, Alise Misāne finished second. In the U13 boys' group, third place went to Aleksandrs Petrovs. In the U26 women's junior group, Jeļizaveta Zaharova won silver.
Several other young Latvian players placed between fourth and twenty-first in various age groups, including in the U16, U19 and U26 categories for both girls/women and boys/men.
What's next
The championship continued on August 8 with the rapid format and will conclude on August 9 with blitz competition. Latvia plans to be represented by 79 participants across all three formats combined.
