The website of the Latvian newspaper Latvijas Avīze, la.lv, has published an interactive quiz that tests knowledge of Latvia's best-known sayings and their authors. The quiz has 15 questions and is aimed at anyone interested in Latvian cultural heritage.

The newspaper notes that a single sentence is sometimes enough to keep its author in people's memory for years. According to the publication, Latvian history, literature and politics have no shortage of such phrases. Some inspired people, others became symbols of an entire era, and still others entered popular speech as jokes and winged words.

How the quiz works

Participants must decide who is the author of a particular saying. The newspaper says some questions are quite easy, while others will require real thought.

The first question asks who said the words "Pastāvēs, kas pārvērtīsies" (roughly, "What changes will endure"). The three answer options are Rūdolfs Blaumanis, Rainis and Kārlis Skalbe.

The quiz is available in the quizzes section of the Latvijas Avīze website.
