Number of newborns registered in Latvia keeps declining
In the first half of 2026, 5,547 newborns were registered in Latvia — down 4.5% from the same period a year earlier, according to preliminary data from the Central Statistical Bureau.

Latvia's Central Statistical Bureau has released preliminary figures showing that the country's birth rate continues to fall. A total of 5,547 newborns were registered in Latvia during the first six months of this year.
Compared with the same period in 2025, the number of newborns dropped by 262, a decline of 4.5%. This means fewer children were born on average each month during the first half of the year than in the previous year's equivalent period.
The figures may still be revised, as the Central Statistical Bureau describes them as preliminary. Nonetheless, they fit into a longer-term pattern of declining birth numbers in Latvia.
