Latvia's solar plants outproduce natural gas in electricity generation for the first time

Electricity generation in Latvia grew by 20.9% in the first seven months of this year compared with the same period in 2025, according to an electricity market review prepared by transmission system operator AS "Augstsprieguma tīkls" (AST).

In total, Latvia produced 4,440 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity during this period. The review highlights a notable milestone: for the first time, solar power plants generated more electricity than facilities using natural gas.

The figures reflect the rapid growth of solar power capacity in Latvia in recent years, which is gradually shifting the country's electricity generation mix toward renewable sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
