Latvia records a day without road deaths during Roadpol safety campaign
During the Europe-wide Roadpol traffic safety campaign, Latvia achieved its main goal of a day with no road deaths, even though the overall number of crashes increased compared with last year.
The Roadpol Safety Days campaign, organized by the European Traffic Police Network Roadpol, has concluded. During the campaign, police across Europe, including in Latvia, devoted significantly more attention to road safety than usual.
In Latvia, the campaign involved intensified checks on the roads. Juris Jančevskis, head of the State Police Response Department, said in an interview with the program "Rīta Panorāma" that this year the campaign's main goal was achieved — securing at least one day without a single road traffic fatality in Latvia.
Number of crashes still rose
At the same time, Jančevskis acknowledged that the overall number of traffic accidents during the campaign period increased compared with the previous year. This suggests that while the most tragic outcome was avoided this time, the broader road safety situation still requires improvement.
The Roadpol Safety Days campaign is held periodically, with police forces across various European countries coordinating stepped-up road controls in an effort to reduce both the number of accidents and their severity.
