Latgale Should Have Enough Heat This Winter, but Many Will Pay More
As the heating season begins in Latgale, heat tariffs have risen in both the largest towns and smaller district heating systems. Supply should not be a problem this winter, but many residents will face higher bills.

Residents of Latgale, the eastern region of Latvia, will most likely have enough heat this winter, but in many places they will have to pay more for it. This follows from an overview by Latvian public media LSM on the start of the heating season in the region, published in October 2026. As heating begins, heat tariffs have increased in both the region's largest cities and its smaller district heating systems.
Increases may have happened in summer
In places where the price has not changed in October, the increase may already have occurred during the summer. This means that even where no new changes were introduced at the start of the heating season, residents may still be paying more than before.
Costlier fuel is not always the cause
Price rises are not always caused by more expensive fuel. In some places the tariff went up simply because a previously applied tariff reduction had ended, so the price returned to a higher level.
LSM explains the topic in more detail in its "Varam paskaidrot" ("We Can Explain") section, which analyses current events in plain language.
