Ukraine's defence ministry says sustained long-range strikes on Russian refineries, stretching from the Moscow region to Siberia, have disabled more than half of the country's total oil refining capacity. Defence minister Yevhenii Khmara said the 51% figure represents a serious blow to Russia's economy and its ability to supply troops fighting in Ukraine. Moscow has not released its own damage figures, but President Vladimir Putin rarely acknowledged that the strikes had cost Russia around 1% of GDP. US President Donald Trump has pointed to the strikes as the reason behind rising petrol prices, saying the Strait of Hormuz is no longer the key factor and that refinery attacks are now driving costs up.

Civilian toll in Kharkiv

Six people were killed and almost 60 injured on Monday when Russian bombs hit a residential area of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Moscow's decision to intensify strikes on civilian infrastructure.

Black Sea ship attack and nuclear plant strike

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported a Russian drone attack on a Turkish-owned grain ship in the Black Sea; Romanian authorities confirmed two crew members died and 11 were rescued. Overnight Monday, Ukrainian drones also struck facilities at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, killing a driver, though officials said there was no threat to nuclear safety.

New anti-drone technology

Ukraine has begun deploying AI-enabled robotic gun turrets to shoot down Russia's fast jet-powered drones threatening Kyiv. Germany's foreign intelligence chief warned that Russia's escalating hybrid attacks risk drawing the country directly into the conflict.
