Heavy rains in Kurzeme may leave part of the harvest unpicked

Persistent autumn rains in the Kurzeme region of Latvia are making vegetable harvesting difficult, with farmers warning part of the crop may be left in the fields. They expect this to affect local vegetable prices.

At the start of the season, this year looked set to bring a strong vegetable harvest, but continuous autumn rains have dampened those hopes. Waterlogged fields are making it difficult to harvest beets, cabbage, potatoes and other vegetables.

The Garīši farm, located in the Vārme parish of the Kuldīga municipality, says the weather conditions will affect the prices of locally grown vegetables, according to a report by Skrunda Television.

Farm representatives explain that wet ground makes it hard for machinery to access the fields, significantly slowing the harvesting process. Part of the crop risks being left unharvested, meaning losses for growers and potentially higher prices for consumers in the near future.
