Official talks on forming Latvia's new government have not yet begun after the election. Andris Kulbergs, the current prime minister and the prime ministerial candidate of the election-winning United List (AS), did not hold official political consultations with other parties this week. His public comments on the matter were also sparse.

The prime minister's office said it was too early to talk about specific partners and the format of the government.

Šlesers offers support

Meanwhile, the party Latvia First (LPV) has taken the initiative. Its leader, Ainārs Šlesers, has promised to support a minority government of professionals formed by Kulbergs. A minority government is one that lacks a majority of votes in parliament and therefore depends on backing from other forces.

The pledge has led political insiders to regard this as one of the most plausible models, according to the Latvian Television programme "de facto".
