Russian strikes kill eight across Ukraine as Moscow vows to continue war
Russian attacks on Sunday killed eight people across Ukraine, including at a children's centre in Sumy, a day after Moscow declared it would keep fighting. President Zelensky said nearly 3,900 drones, bombs and missiles had been fired at Ukraine over the past week.
Russian strikes killed eight people across Ukraine on Sunday, a day after Moscow reaffirmed its intent to continue the war, Ukrainian authorities reported.
Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said Russian strikes hit a children's centre in the northern city of Sumy, killing three people, including a 16-year-old girl. President Volodymyr Zelensky said three more people died in overnight strikes on the southern Zaporizhzhia region, while a drone strike killed one man in Kyiv. Officials in the Odesa region reported one additional death following what they called a "massive strike" on the southern part of the region.
Kyiv mayor Vitaly Klitschko said a woman and two 16-year-olds were wounded and hospitalised in the capital, where the city administration reported damage to 16 sites, including 12 houses, a warehouse and a production facility. In the Odesa region, regional head Oleg Kiper said the strikes damaged housing, a shop, a hotel, a medical building and a grain warehouse.
Thousands of weapons fired in a week
Zelensky wrote on social media that over the past week Russia had launched more than 2,200 attack drones, around 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles of various types, many of them ballistic. He said the latest strikes had hit two kindergartens, two schools, housing and other civilian infrastructure across the country. Zelensky argued that this wave of drone attacks contradicted Russian claims of readiness for de-escalation, including in talks with American negotiators.
In Moscow, Russia's defence ministry said it had struck data centres belonging to Kyivstar and Omega Telecom in Kyiv, claiming both companies supported the Ukrainian military. It released an image of a drone marked "Digital Detox," confirming the strikes aimed to disrupt internet access.
On Saturday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the UN General Assembly that Russia intended to pursue its military campaign "to the end." Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians. The defence ministry also said Russian forces had seized the border village of Khrypuny in the eastern Kharkiv region, an area Russia does not formally claim but has repeatedly attacked and partly occupied. US-led efforts to broker an end to the war have so far failed to produce a breakthrough.
