At least one dead in Russian strike on Kyiv as Zelenskyy set to address UN
Russian drone strikes on Kyiv killed at least one person and injured seven on Wednesday morning, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prepares to address the UN General Assembly.
Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said Wednesday morning that at least one person was killed and seven others injured in a series of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital. According to the mayor, drones hit a business centre, a transport facility, and a non-residential building.
Ukrainian oil company Ukrnafta reported that one of its petrol stations in Kyiv was also struck, marking the sixth such facility hit in recent weeks. Witnesses and Reuters reported smoke rising over central Kyiv following the drone attack, visible near the Foreign Ministry building and historic monasteries in the city centre.
Zelenskyy to address UN assembly
Ukraine is set to feature prominently on the second day of the UN General Assembly in New York. Leaders will first attend a Security Council meeting on Ukraine before President Volodymyr Zelenskyy takes the podium to address the assembly — a key opportunity to rally international support for Kyiv ahead of any potential peace talks with Moscow.
Zelenskyy had limited opportunity to speak during his meeting with US President Donald Trump the previous evening, as Trump dominated the exchange with reporters. Zelenskyy expressed hope that Trump would help end the war as quickly as possible, ideally before winter. He later said on social media that the two discussed ending the war and possible de-escalatory steps that could open the way to diplomacy. He added that Ukraine is ready for any format of an energy ceasefire, provided Russia agrees not to attack Ukraine's energy system.
Ahead of Zelenskyy's address, other European leaders — from Latvia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Estonia and Cyprus — are also scheduled to speak at the assembly.
