Russia stepping up fake Ukrainian government pages to bait recruits, security service warns

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has reported that Russian intelligence agencies are intensifying efforts to create counterfeit pages impersonating Ukrainian government bodies online. According to the agency, these fake pages serve two main purposes.

First, they are used as a tool for spreading disinformation. By mimicking the appearance and communication style of genuine state institutions, the fake pages lend false credibility to misleading content, making it more likely to be believed and shared.

Second, and notably, the SBU states that Russian intelligence uses these counterfeit pages to harvest data on Ukrainians who subscribe to or follow them. Information gathered from users in this way can then be used to identify potential targets for recruitment as agents working on behalf of Russian intelligence.

The SBU describes this as part of a broader approach in which the online space is exploited simultaneously for information manipulation and intelligence-gathering purposes. Posing as official government channels allows the true source to remain hidden while making it easier to reach audiences who trust communications from state institutions.

Ukraine's security service is urging citizens to carefully verify the authenticity of online pages and accounts before following them or sharing personal information, particularly when such pages claim to represent government bodies. The SBU says it continues to monitor the spread of these fake resources and cautions that their number could keep growing as Russia adapts its tactics.
