Russia has started importing gasoline from India to address a fuel shortage caused by Ukrainian drone attacks on oil refineries and energy infrastructure, according to two industry sources cited by Reuters.

This move marks a significant shift in Russia's energy policy, as the country has traditionally been a major exporter of oil products. However, the Ukrainian drone strikes in recent months have severely reduced Russia's domestic refining capacity, creating a gasoline deficit in the local market.

India has become a major buyer of Russian crude oil since Western sanctions limited Russia's exports to other markets. Now, India is re-exporting refined products, including gasoline, to Russia at higher prices. This arrangement allows India to profit while providing Russia with an alternative source to meet domestic fuel needs.

The exact volumes of gasoline imported from India are not yet known. However, sources indicate that imports have already started and will continue until Russia can restore its refining capacity. This situation highlights the impact of Ukrainian strikes not only on the battlefield but also on Russia's internal economy and energy security.

Experts note that Russia's reliance on Indian gasoline is a temporary solution. Until Russia manages to repair the damaged refineries, it will be forced to continue importing fuel to prevent a shortage in the gasoline market. This adds an additional financial burden, as imported gasoline is more expensive than domestically produced fuel.
