Russia Bolsters Military Presence in the North

A joint investigation by Sweden's SVT and Norway's NRK reveals that Russia is actively building new military infrastructure along its borders with Nordic and Baltic countries. Satellite imagery shows new barracks, ammunition depots, and concentrations of military equipment at multiple locations—the Pechenga district, ten kilometers from the Norwegian border; Petrozavodsk and Sapjorn on the Finnish border; Luga near Pskov; and the Königsberg area.

Estimated Troop Increases

According to estimates, the number of Russian troops on the Finnish border could rise from the current 20,000 to 80,000, while on the Norwegian border it could increase from 7,000 to 17,000. Analysts suggest Moscow plans to staff these facilities after the intense phase of the war Russia launched against Ukraine subsides.

NATO Commander's Assessment

"While Russia is preoccupied with Ukraine, the immediate military threat is minimal," said Major General Brian Nissen, NATO's commander of forces in the Baltic states and Poland.
