Russia launched 36 ballistic missiles at the Ukrainian capital Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight into Saturday, 7 November, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. The attack hit energy infrastructure, and Zelensky called on Ukraine's partners, above all the United States, not to leave the country alone in its fight against Russia's invasion.

Damage in Kyiv

Zelensky said energy was once again the main target. The capital is facing a difficult situation with electricity, water and heating supplies. Residential buildings and the Northern Bridge were damaged, and a kindergarten was partly destroyed.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Northern Bridge across the Dnipro River was damaged and traffic in both directions has been closed. According to him, five people were hurt in the city, including a 14-year-old child, and two of the injured are in hospital.

Strikes on substations

In the Kyiv region, the strikes targeted substations linking the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants with Kyiv and the country's central regions. Substations were also damaged in the Vinnytsia, Zhytomyr, Rivne, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Twelve more regions were attacked besides Kyiv. In total, Zelensky said, nine people were injured, including one child.

Zelensky argued that Russia is firing ballistic missiles at Ukraine's critical infrastructure while preparing for trilateral talks.

Appeal to the US

The president stressed that while Russia tries to plunge Kyiv and the entire country into a complete power blackout, Ukraine must not be left alone. He said Ukraine is counting on stronger bilateral support from the US and greater attention to Ukraine from the US Congress, because Russia keeps increasing the number of its attacks.

Zelensky added that Ukraine hopes for unity between both US parties on security issues, on providing support, on condemning Russian aggression and on stepping up sanctions pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
