Russia builds jam-proof drone force with Chinese technology, but supply chain remains fragile
According to Euromaidan Press, Russia's drone capabilities rely on Chinese-made fiber optics and mesh modems to resist electronic warfare, yet this dependence on China could become a critical vulnerability.
Russia has developed a drone force designed to operate in environments where adversaries actively jam radio signals. The key to this resilience lies in two technologies sourced from China: fiber-optic communications and mesh modems.
Fiber-optic cables allow drones to maintain stable control even when signals are being suppressed, as data is transmitted through a physical line rather than through the air. Mesh modems, in turn, enable drones to communicate with each other, forming a distributed network that is harder to disrupt.
Notably, these modems are standard catalogue items, meaning they can be easily purchased in industrial quantities. This has allowed Russia to rapidly expand its drone fleet without developing proprietary technology.
However, this reliance on Chinese supplies is also a vulnerability. If China decides to restrict exports or the supply chain is interrupted, the effectiveness of Russia's drone operations could be severely undermined. Thus, while the drones themselves are now resistant to electronic warfare, their operational capability still depends on external factors.
This situation highlights how modern military solutions often rely on commercially available products rather than specialized defense developments. It also underscores the critical importance of supply chain stability in contemporary conflicts.
