Russia suffers record losses in Ukraine but deploys new drone types

Russian forces are reporting record casualties and withdrawing from parts of occupied Ukrainian territory, yet Moscow is deploying new drones to overcome Ukraine's defences while continuing efforts to 'freeze' the country.

Losses and retreat

Russia's armed forces have recently been suffering record losses in Ukraine, both in terms of killed and wounded soldiers and in territory under their control. Moscow has been forced to retreat from parts of previously occupied areas, signalling difficulty holding onto captured ground despite the prolonged invasion.

New drones as a response

At the same time, Russia has not halted its military adaptation - it is using new types of drones to break through Ukraine's defences. These new attack tools are helping Russia keep up pressure on Ukraine even as its units struggle on the battlefield.

Attempts to 'freeze' Ukraine

Beyond the frontline situation, Russia is continuing a strategy aimed at 'freezing' Ukraine - using the approaching winter period as an additional tool of pressure against the country and its population. This approach shows that Moscow, despite setbacks along the front line, is seeking alternative ways to maintain pressure on Kyiv.

Overall, the situation presents a contradictory picture: on one hand, the Russian army is experiencing some of its heaviest losses of the war and is being forced to retreat; on the other, it is adapting technologically by deploying new drones to offset battlefield setbacks and sustain broader pressure on Ukraine.
