Russia strikes Kyiv bridge again as German chancellor visits, announces defence deals
A Russian drone strike on Kyiv's Pivnichnyi Bridge and attacks on sites in Sumy and Dnipro killed one person and injured six, as Germany's chancellor visited Kyiv and new defence agreements were announced.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy shared video footage of a Russian drone strike on Kyiv's Pivnichnyi (North) Bridge on the morning of 4 October. The bridge, which links the two banks of the Dnipro River, was hit for the second time in as many days — a jet-powered drone had already struck it on 3 October, injuring two people.
Zelenskyy used the occasion to detail the scale of Russia's aerial campaign over the previous week. According to the president, Russian forces fired more than 1,900 attack drones, 1,700 aerial bombs and 25 missiles at Ukraine during that period. Notably, over 800 of the drones were jet-powered, pointing to an escalation in the sophistication of the weapons being deployed.
Additional targets hit
Beyond the Kyiv bridge, Russian forces also struck a medical supplies warehouse in Sumy and a telecommunications facility in Dnipro. The combined attacks left one person dead and six injured.
Chancellor's visit and new agreements
Zelenskyy confirmed that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was in Kyiv on 4 October. Following discussions, the Ukrainian leader announced what he described as important agreements between Ukraine and Germany aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defence capabilities, though specific details of the deals were not disclosed.
The renewed strikes on the bridge underscore Russia's continued targeting of Ukrainian infrastructure, even as diplomatic efforts to bolster Kyiv's defences continue with key allies.
