A shooting in the historic centre of Kraków, a city in southern Poland, on Saturday left five people dead and at least ten wounded, according to police. The attacker was wounded and taken to hospital. Authorities are still establishing his motive and the circumstances of the attack.

How the attack unfolded

Regional police said that at about 3 p.m. a man drove into the city's main market square and began shooting from his car at random passers-by. Police officers returned fire and wounded him.

Video footage and photographs show medics working near the city's St. Mary's Basilica. An air ambulance helicopter also landed in the square.

Government response

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that, following what he called a "tragic shooting", he was receiving regular updates from the interior minister. He added that police are investigating the motive and circumstances of the attack.

Context

Public shootings are relatively rare in Poland, where firearm ownership is strictly regulated. The casualty figures may change as the investigation continues and police update their information.
