In the English Premier League, the top football division in England, Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 (1-0 at half-time) at home in round six. The win moved Coventry up from 19th to 14th place and out of the relegation zone, while Newcastle missed a chance to break into the top four of the table.

How the match unfolded

Midfielder Jack Rudoni put Coventry ahead in the first half, scoring from the penalty spot in the 6th minute. Coventry used one of their two shots in that period, while Newcastle had nine attempts but did not find the target.

Early in the second half, in the 48th minute, 19-year-old striker Sidiki Cherif doubled the lead. He joined Coventry in the summer from Fenerbahce of Istanbul for 24.5 million euros, and it was his first Premier League goal.

Newcastle revived the contest in the 70th minute when defender Sven Botman sent a left-footed shot into the net from outside the penalty area to make it 2-1. However, Ellis Simms restored the two-goal margin in the 81st minute, and Stephen Mfuni added a fourth in the 86th.

Standing in the table

After six games Coventry have six points and sit 14th. Newcastle, on eight points, remain 11th. Manchester City lead the table with 18 points after six rounds, with Arsenal second on 15.
