Riga Playground Clash With Teenagers Leads to Police Case and a Detention
State Police have opened an administrative case over a conflict between teenagers and a father at a playground in Riga's Centra sporta kvartāls, where a knife was involved. One of the young people involved was detained on Wednesday.

The State Police have launched administrative violation proceedings over possible disturbance of public order following a conflict on 6 October at the playground of the Centra sporta kvartāls in Riga. Police told the news agency LETA that a young man who had clashed with the injured party was detained on Wednesday. Officers say they have also identified other young people who may have been involved and are still establishing the exact circumstances.
What happened at the playground
A father wrote on social media that on Tuesday evening he was at the Barona Street playground with his daughter. A group of teenagers nearby was swearing very loudly, and when he reprimanded them, the situation turned into a confrontation. The group included an adult young man who came at him aggressively, and the father slapped him in the face. A teenage girl then ran up with a knife and tried to hand it to the young man.
Other adults rushed over and tried to separate the father from the youths. When the man tried to leave with his child, the group surrounded him and would not let him go.
The police response
The man asked the playground administration to call the police and later phoned them himself, but was told to wait in the queue. About 40 minutes later he called again and received the same answer.
The State Police said the number of calls that day was high and that at some stages of receiving the information, shortcomings occurred in registering it. As a result, officers arrived late, after those involved had left. The police promised to improve their work organisation and apologised to the victim.
Riga Municipal Police, for their part, said they had received no information about the incident. They noted that the sports quarter is part of a specially designed patrol route, that security staff also monitor the area, and that no groups of young people regularly disturbing visitors had come to their attention.
Police are asking witnesses to call 67086855 or 112.
