Latvian film sector wants a lasting solution after streaming levy is postponed
Latvia has temporarily postponed a levy on streaming platforms, but the film industry wants a long-term funding solution. Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs has promised one million euros as compensation.

Latvia's film industry is counting on the one million euros that Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs (of the party "Apvienotais saraksts", the United List) has promised as compensation for the temporarily postponed levy on streaming platforms. The postponement has prompted a strong reaction in the sector, and LSM Kultūra asks whether that reaction is exaggerated.
What the sector wants
The industry stresses that a one-off sum is not enough. It wants a permanent solution that would increase funding and help create a competitive environment, at least on a Baltic scale.
Opportunities left unused after the Oscar
So far Latvia can boast only one Oscar, won by the film "Straume" (Flow). Film producer Matīss Kaža believes that the opportunities the award gave the country have remained unused.
