Chinese judoka Tang Jing was thrown out of the Asian Games women's -70kg quarter-final in Nagoya after appearing to bite the arm of Japanese opponent Rin Maeda during their bout.

After the pair were separated from a hold early in the contest, Maeda rolled up her sleeve and showed the referee her left forearm, where marks resembling a bite were visible just above the wrist.

Officials reviewed video footage of the incident before disqualifying Tang, 31, a three-time Asian Games medallist, for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Maeda's coach, Maki Tsukada, said afterwards that the mark looked as though it could start bleeding and was very clear and distinct, though no discussion took place at the time about disinfecting the wound.

Tang appeared to contest the officials' decision before shaking hands with Maeda and leaving the competition area without speaking to the media.

Maeda, 21, said she had been unsure what would happen after reporting the incident to the referee, describing it as a first-time experience in her career. She said she felt some pain immediately afterward, but the adrenaline of competition meant she barely noticed it once she was back on the mat.

Maeda went on to win the event, beating Kazakhstan's Azhar Askhat in the final to claim the gold medal.
