Peru's electoral authority on Friday officially declared right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori the winner of the country's presidential election. The announcement came weeks after the June 7 runoff vote against leftist rival Roberto Sanchez.

Following the official vote count that concluded earlier this week, Fujimori secured 50.13% of the vote, while Sanchez received 49.86%, giving her a narrow lead. Fujimori is the daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, who was imprisoned for human rights abuses.

During her campaign, which focused on cracking down on crime, Fujimori pledged to “unite the country,” which has faced years of political and economic turmoil. Fujimori and Sanchez advanced to the runoff after defeating 33 other candidates in April.
