Rare Amur tiger released into Kazakhstan's wild

Kazakhstan has released an Amur tiger named Umit into the unfenced Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve, a key milestone in an ambitious project to restore wild tiger populations in Central Asia. The species disappeared from the region more than 70 years ago, making this release a significant step for conservation.

Umit, whose name means "hope" in Kazakh, has been fitted with a GPS/GSM tracking collar. This technology will allow experts to monitor her movements and assess how she adapts to the natural environment. The release is part of a carefully planned reintroduction program.

In addition to Umit, an adult male tiger remains under observation while specialists evaluate his readiness for release. Two cubs, which arrived at the reserve at around six months of age, will continue to receive expert care until they are 18 months old. This phased approach aims to ensure the tigers are well-prepared for life in the wild.

To address safety concerns, local authorities have set up a warning system. If a tiger comes within five kilometers of a village, residents will be alerted promptly. The reintroduction project represents a significant step for biodiversity in Central Asia, offering hope for the return of a species that once thrived in the region.
