Schools in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, have introduced a new six-level heat policy for student athletics, while Manchester, England, faces a mix of sun and heavy rain this week before temperatures climb toward the weekend.
US: New heat guidelines for school athletes
Pittsylvania County Schools in Virginia are using a new heat-level system for the first time this school year to protect student-athletes during outdoor practices, according to WSET. The policy ranks conditions from Level 1 to Level 6, adjusting practice requirements, work-to-rest ratios and water breaks accordingly. At Level 6, both practices and competitions are canceled outright.
Previously, decisions on whether to modify or halt practices were largely left to individual coaches. Now, the county's athletic coordinator sends regular email updates to coaches, students and parents about changes caused by extreme heat.
Superintendent Steven Mayhew said the district's priority is student safety, telling WSET that parents "can be sure that we've got the students' best interests" and that schools will work with families during hot weather. The district has also started stocking bottled water on all school buses to keep students hydrated.
