Why NVIDIA's most powerful GPU rarely reaches gamers
NVIDIA's $16,000 RTX PRO 6000 outperforms even the RTX 5090 but is built for AI and 3D professionals rather than gamers. Its massive memory and workstation features justify the price only outside gaming.
Alongside the popular GeForce RTX 5090, NVIDIA offers an even more powerful desktop graphics card: the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Workstation Edition, which the company calls the most powerful desktop GPU it has ever created. This card, however, is not intended for typical gamers.
The RTX 5090, launched at $1,999, comes with 32GB of GDDR7 memory and can draw up to 575W of power. The RTX PRO 6000 surpasses it significantly, featuring 96GB of GDDR7 ECC memory, 24,064 CUDA cores, and a maximum board power of 600W.
A high price for professional needs
In the US, the RTX PRO 6000 currently costs $16,000 — nearly double its original launch price of $8,565, which had already risen to $13,250 before the latest increase. NVIDIA has not explained the reason for the price hike, though it coincides with rising memory costs and broader GPU price increases across the industry.
The card is aimed primarily at AI developers, engineers, 3D artists, and other professionals who need to process large datasets, complex 3D projects, VR environments, or run multiple demanding applications simultaneously. Beyond the hardware, RTX PRO cards also come with different software support — dedicated workstation drivers and certifications for professional applications, rather than the gaming-focused Game Ready drivers. This professional product line has existed within NVIDIA's lineup for over two decades, previously under the Quadro brand.
Does it work for gaming?
Tests by tech YouTuber der8auer show the RTX PRO 6000 does outperform the RTX 5090 in some games — about 14 percent faster in Cyberpunk 2077, roughly 11 percent faster in Star Wars Outlaws and Remnant 2, and around 3 percent faster in Assassin's Creed Mirage. However, given the card's eightfold higher price, such gains are not economically justified for gaming purposes. The card can be purchased by anyone through NVIDIA's marketplace or partners, but its real value only becomes apparent in professional settings rather than gaming rigs.
