California man arrested at Trump's golf course hit with additional charges

Authorities have released new details about the case against Jeanine John Taele, the 38-year-old California man taken into custody near former President Donald Trump's golf resort in Rancho Palos Verdes. Taele now faces additional charges as the investigation continues.

According to officials, federal agents first spotted Taele on July 31, wearing an earpiece and taking photos and videos of security personnel assessing the property. He returned on August 2, two days before Trump was scheduled to appear at the resort for a fundraising dinner with the Republican National Committee. Taele reportedly told agents he was a State Department employee assigned to a security detail.

After detaining him for suspicious behavior, Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies found a loaded magazine in his pocket. A search of his pickup truck, parked at the golf club, turned up a loaded 9mm pistol, binoculars, and a badge labeled 'security protection agent.' At his residence in Downey, law enforcement recovered a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, an illegally modified AR-type pistol, and notebooks containing what officials described as 'concerning statements.' The sheriff's office declined to elaborate on the contents.

Taele is currently held at a downtown LA jail on state charges. Court records show he faces a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle and two felony counts: possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, and manufacturing/importing/selling a large-capacity magazine. Separately, he was charged federally with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle found at his home—a weapon allegedly modified from an AR-style rifle with its barrel trimmed from 14 inches to 10 inches. His court appearance scheduled for Wednesday was canceled.

Trump commented on the arrest, telling Fox News that 'only consequential presidents' are targeted, adding, 'and I am definitely consequential.' FBI Assistant Director Patrick Grandy said in a statement, 'There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump's life.'

Taele's background includes service as a US Marine corporal, with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He served from 2008 to 2016 and earned several commendations. He had previously appeared in court on state weapons charges and a second-degree robbery charge unrelated to this case. The public defender's office declined to comment.
