How to tell when your Apple Pencil tip needs replacing

Apple Pencil tips wear down over time and typically need replacing every two years, sooner for heavy users, with both official and third-party replacements available.

The Apple Pencil, used for drawing and writing on Apple tablets, doesn't shed graphite like a traditional pencil, but its tip still wears down with use. The stylus is expected to grow even more popular now that the so-called iPhone Duo setup lets it work with an iPhone model as well.

Despite the range of Apple Pencil versions on the market — from the Pro model to the USB-C version, plus older first- and second-generation Pencils — they all share one key feature: a detachable tip that gradually wears out.

Signs of wear

One of the earliest signs is increased friction, as a worn tip loses its smooth, rounded shape and becomes rougher to the touch. Over time, the tip can wear down enough to expose the metal underneath, which is a clear signal that replacement can't wait any longer. Users may also notice connectivity issues developing alongside the physical wear, another indicator that the tip has reached the end of its usable life. These signs shouldn't be ignored, since a worn-out tip risks scratching the device's screen.

As a general rule, tips should be replaced roughly every two years, though frequent users may need to swap theirs out in under a year.

Replacement options

While different Apple Pencil models vary in features and price, they share similar durability and battery performance, with the tip being the main wear point across all of them. Fortunately, replacing it is simple — Apple sells packs of four tips for $19, compatible with every Apple Pencil model.

Because the tips are so easy to swap, a third-party market has also emerged around them. Brands such as PenTips and Delidigi offer alternatives geared toward different needs — one focused more on drawing feel, the other on a writing-friendly experience — giving users options for precision and longevity beyond Apple's own tips.
