Ukraine downs most drones in July but struggles to intercept ballistic missiles

Drone interception rate high
In July, Ukraine shot down 5,142 Russian attack drones, roughly 87% of all such drones launched. This suggests Ukraine's air defense systems are working relatively effectively against drone threats.
Ballistic missiles remain a major challenge
The picture looks very different for ballistic missiles. Out of 195 ballistic missiles launched by Russia, Ukrainian forces managed to intercept only 29 — about 15% of the total. This means the vast majority of the missiles reached their targets despite air defense efforts.
The gap between the drone and missile interception rates suggests Ukraine lacks sufficient interceptor missiles or other resources to effectively counter ballistic missile threats, which pose a technologically more demanding air defense challenge than shooting down slower-moving drones.
