New e-bike motors with integrated eCVT promise seamless shifting and reduced maintenance

Two companies – Avinox (a DJI spinoff) and Gobao – unveiled next-generation motor gearbox units (MGUs) with electronic continuously variable transmissions (eCVT) at the Eurobike show, offering infinite gear ratios and automatic cadence control.

At last week's Eurobike trade show in Frankfurt, two companies introduced innovative e-bike motors that combine an electric motor and automatic gearbox into a single compact housing. Avinox, a DJI spinoff known for its M1 and M2 drive systems, showcased the MG Concept featuring an integrated eCVT. Startup Gobao presented a similar solution with its X-series MGUs.

The key innovation is the electronically controlled continuously variable transmission, which eliminates discrete gear steps and allows riders to define an unlimited number of virtual gears with custom ratios. The system constantly monitors speed, pedal pressure, and terrain to adjust gears seamlessly, maintaining a constant pedaling cadence in auto mode. This resembles the stepless shifting experience of mechanical CVTs.

These next-generation MGUs eliminate fragile derailleurs and heavy multi-speed cassettes, resulting in a more durable transmission with lower maintenance requirements. Gears can shift quickly under heavy load or at a standstill, and the mass moves from the rear wheel to the bike's center, improving handling.

Avinox developed the MG Concept in partnership with Canyon, Commencal, Forbidden, and Mondraker, who displayed prototype eMTBs at Eurobike – three with chains and one with a belt drive. Gobao used its own branded e-bike to demonstrate pre-production prototypes. Early ride reports indicate both MGUs are impressive, quieter, and better than existing Pinion systems.

Gobao plans to start mass production in February 2027, offering the X1 (120 Nm torque, 1200 W max power) and X1P (150 Nm, 1500 W). Avinox commits to a 2027 launch without a specific date, with its production motor expected to deliver similar torque and power. While initially targeting electric mountain bikes, these motors are expected to migrate to commuter, cargo, and family e-bikes within a few years.
