Jānis Timma's mother speaks out about his final months and marriage to Sedokova

Nearly two years after the death of Latvian basketball player Jānis Timma, his mother Ausma has given what may be her most open interview yet, describing his final months and the family's relationship with singer Anna Sedokova.

Ausma says that after Timma began a relationship with Sedokova, he grew distant from the family, and for a long time normal communication with her son was difficult. Shortly before his death, however, mother and son managed to reconcile.

A painful issue

What still pains Ausma most are the circumstances of how her son's body was handed over to the family. In an interview with the Russian outlet News.ru, she said she could forgive Sedokova for leaving Timma without money or property, and even for straining the family's relationship with him, but not for how the handover took place. According to Ausma, the body was returned unprepared, in a garbage bag, and Sedokova did not personally show up for the identification, despite earlier promising to handle the funeral arrangements.

Denies abuse claims

Ausma also rejected earlier claims by Sedokova regarding violence in their relationship. She said she would never believe her son raised a hand against a woman, noting that the only fight he was ever involved in happened in kindergarten at age three — after which she taught him never to hurt those weaker than him, a lesson she believes he carried throughout his life.

Plans for the future

According to Ausma, shortly before his death Timma was preparing for a fresh start: he intended to formally divorce Sedokova, kept training, and hoped to return to professional basketball. She last saw him in late October 2024, when he stayed with her for about a week and spoke about his determination to change his life.

Timma and Sedokova's relationship began in 2019, and they married in September 2020. In autumn 2024 the singer announced their separation, and on 17 December of that year Timma was found dead.
