Wissa and Toure impress off the bench
Yoane Wissa, who endured a difficult first season at Newcastle, was rated the standout performer after coming on at half-time and coolly converting two goals. He will be hoping to carry that form into the upcoming World Cup with DR Congo.
Also introduced at half-time was Bazoumana Toure, who made his debut after joining from Hoffenheim in a £43m deal. The rapid forward played a part in both goals, first pressing Guido Fernandes into an error that led to the opener, then setting up Wissa for the second.
Debuts and emerging talent
Aladji Bamba also made his first appearance for the club since arriving from Monaco in a deal worth up to £34m, while several younger players featured, including 18-year-old Henry Johnson, who made his Newcastle debut.
Malick Thiaw wore the captain's armband on his 25th birthday, and Jacob Ramsey stood out with an energetic display, including a clipped pass that led to a goal later ruled out for offside.
Elanga injury casts shadow over game
The match was marred by a heavy challenge from Jose Gaya on Anthony Elanga, who suffered a bruised shin and was taken off on a stretcher in visible distress. The club said it is hopeful the injury is not serious.
