Jaissle wins on Newcastle debut but resists getting carried away
New Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle guided his side to a 2-1 pre-season win over Valencia in his first match in charge, but insisted there is still plenty of work ahead.
Newcastle United began the Matthias Jaissle era with a 2-1 pre-season victory over Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium, though the new head coach was quick to temper any excitement, stressing that much work remains before the season begins.
The match started poorly for the visitors, who fell behind inside four minutes to a Filip Ugrinic strike. The contest also turned tense after a reckless challenge from Jose Gaya on Anthony Elanga, who had to be stretchered off. Gaya was sent off for the tackle. Jaissle admitted he feared the worst watching Elanga in distress, but the forward was later seen walking, with the injury confirmed as a bruised shin rather than anything serious.
Despite the setback, Newcastle fought back, with substitute Yoane Wissa scoring twice to seal the win. Fellow new signings Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur, who joined from Hoffenheim and Ajax respectively, also impressed after coming off the bench.
Jaissle said victories help build confidence, particularly after a demanding week of training.
A younger squad
The club has undergone major upheaval over the past year, losing former head coach Eddie Howe along with key players including Alexander Isak and Bruno Guimaraes. The squad's average age has dropped sharply — forward Harvey Barnes, 28, was the oldest starter on Saturday, while several younger players made their debuts.
Jaissle, known for developing young talent during his time at RB Salzburg, said patience would be essential as the squad's youngsters adapt to the demands of top-level football.
The coach has also shown a readiness to make tough calls, leaving experienced goalkeeper Nick Pope out of the squad entirely for the Valencia match, while still expressing respect for the player's career.
Following the trip to Spain, Jaissle now travels to Newcastle for the first time as head coach, ahead of his formal unveiling at St James' Park next week.
