Wolves Kill 24 Sheep in Three Nights in Izvalta; No Compensation Mechanism Exists
In Izvalta Parish, Krāslava Region, wolves attacked a farm's sheep over three nights, killing more than two dozen animals. The State Forest Service is yet to confirm the attacks were by wolves, but there is little doubt. A farm in Izvalta Parish, Krāslava Region, has suffered three wolf attacks on its sheep within three consecutive nights. More than twenty sheep have been killed. The farmer is awaiting confirmation from the State Forest Service that wolves were responsible, although there is little doubt.
The current compensation mechanism does not provide for reimbursing such losses, leaving the farm without financial relief.
Since the wolf hunting season does not open until mid-July, the Krāslava municipality has sent a request to the State Forest Service for a special permit to cull the predators. If granted, the permit would allow timely action to prevent further attacks on livestock.
