6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Indonesia
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit off eastern Indonesia on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia on Friday, July 3, 2026, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremor occurred at a depth of 120 kilometers, approximately 58 kilometers west of Tobelo in North Maluku province, at 11:31 local time (02:31 GMT).
Umar Abbas, a resident of Ternate, located about 114 kilometers from the epicenter, told AFP news agency: "I was sitting and having coffee at a roadside stall when suddenly my chair started rocking. I panicked for a moment because I'm still traumatized by past earthquakes."
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake posed no tsunami threat. Indonesia and neighboring countries frequently experience seismic activity due to their location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of intense volcanic and tectonic activity stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
