A wave of protests in India led by young activists under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party recently succeeded in forcing the country's education minister to resign. But for many of the women who joined the demonstrations, the fallout is far from over.
New pressure after the protests
According to a report from journalists on the ground, dozens of women who participated in the demonstrations say they are now being targeted with a barrage of threats online. While the street movement itself has wound down, those involved describe facing a new struggle unfolding on two separate fronts.
Legal cases and doxxing
One front is legal, with several women now involved in court cases tied to their participation in the protests. The other is digital: participants report being doxxed, with personal details and private information exposed online, apparently intended to intimidate or shame them.
The report notes that this backlash has emerged even after the protest movement achieved its central goal — the minister's resignation — showing that consequences for participants have continued well beyond the point when the street demonstrations themselves ended.
