Eesti Pank, Estonia's central bank, has announced plans to release a specially designed €2 coin in 2027 dedicated to the island of Hiiumaa. The coin's main image features the island's best-known landmark, the Kõpu Lighthouse, encircled by sea waves, with light beams echoing the striped pattern found on Hiiumaa's traditional folk skirt.

That striped pattern holds particular meaning for islanders, standing for continuity and resilience while reflecting the sense of security tied to their home island. The coin was designed by Kaupo Kangro.

The Kõpu Lighthouse was first completed in 1531, making it the third-oldest lighthouse still in operation anywhere in the world.

A new regional series

Eesti Pank plans to mint one million of the Hiiumaa coins, which will enter circulation through regular retail channels. Like all euro coins, it will be accepted as legal tender across the entire euro area.

Hiiumaa, recognized for its unique natural landscape and long-standing maritime traditions, will be the first county featured in a new coin series from Eesti Pank. The series is intended to showcase the diversity and distinct cultural character of Estonia's different regions.
