Estonia's RMK Removes Love Locks and Renovates Area Around Kaali Crater
Estonia's State Forest Management Centre (RMK) is renovating the infrastructure around the Kaali meteorite crater on Saaremaa island. Love locks that newlyweds had attached to the fencing by the shore were cut off, as RMK does not support the tradition.

Estonia's State Forest Management Centre (RMK) is renovating the infrastructure around the Kaali crater, according to the outlet Saarte Hääl. During the work, love locks that newlyweds had attached to the fencing near the shore were also cut off.
What will be renovated
The reconstruction is set to update and repair the surfaces of the paths, replace damaged dolomite steps and barrier slabs, put all metal structures in order and repair the benches.
Why the locks were removed
Yüllar Soonik, head of RMK's visitor zone, said the centre does not support the love lock tradition. He explained that the stone table on the southern viewing platform was intended for newlyweds to place their glasses on, while the bride could say goodbye to her maiden name from the stairs, symbolically drowning it in the lake. Over time, newlyweds began attaching love locks to the fencing by the shore.
Safety measures
To ensure visitor safety, several trees near the crater will also be cut down, and hazardous dolomite blocks, which children and adults like to climb, will be fenced off.
